About the Concert Staging
On June 8, 1917, a fire ignited deep within the Granite Mountain/Speculator Mine in Butte, Montana. Within hours, 168 men had perished in what remains the deadliest hard-rock mining disaster in American history.
No Greater Love is a concert staging conceived to honor those men and the community that endured — the survivors, the widows, the children, and the generations who carry their memory forward. Performed at the historic Mother Lode Theatre, this production brings their story to life through music, testimony, and remembrance.

On June 8, 1917, 168 miners descended into the Granite Mountain/Speculator Mine and never returned. Their sacrifice — and the community's grief — echoes across a century.
Their Stories
Behind every name on the memorial are families, neighbors, and survivors whose stories deserve to be heard. We are gathering accounts from descendants and community members.
Widow
Madge lost her husband Manus Dugan in the Granite Mountain disaster just one month before the birth of their first child. For days she did not know whether he was dead or alive — a vigil shared by hundreds of Butte families that terrible June.
Survivor
Elmer Miller was the last known survivor of the Granite Mountain fire. After making it out alive, he and his brother Clarence opened a shoe repair business in Butte — a quiet testament to life rebuilt in the shadow of unimaginable loss.
